Africa Development Forum – Information Page

President Obama will host the United States – Africa Leaders Summit in Washington, D.C. on August 5th and 6th. The Summit is intended to strengthen ties with one of the world’s most dynamic and fastest-growing regions.

In support of the Summit, the UAA’s Development Issues Committee has brought together Africare, Meridian Institute, New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD), Society for International Development (SID-Washington) and Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars as co-sponsors of the Africa Development Forum – a four-week set of discussions, panels, talks and related events in advance of and following the Summit.

The idea of the conference is to stimulate thought about African development, the current situation and prospects. The effort will reflect the independent initiative of a very wide range of organizations from Africa and Washington, D.C. Events will be organized and sponsored by different organizations, at different sites, around different development topics, over the three-week period preceding and week following the Summit.

We hope that UAA members will volunteer to help us to identify organizations willing to join us as a sponsor – will suggest an event to the Forum – and, of course, participate at one or more of the different venues. Events can be as elaborate or as informal as you and organizations might decide – the important point being to get it registered and promoted by the African Development Forum.
