The Foreign Affairs Retirees of New England, or FARNE, formed in 1983, is an informal association of former USG employees and spouses who, following service with one of the U.S. foreign affairs agencies, now live in New England. Membership also includes other retirees with extensive overseas experience of foreign affairs and professional diplomacy. Our purpose is simply to create opportunities for members to come together – at three luncheon meetings per year, on a rotating basis somewhere in New England – in a relaxed atmosphere. Old friends and new enjoy sharing our experiences, while stimulating speakers or panels address foreign affairs topics. Recent events were in Atkinson, NH (former Ambassador and Brig. Gen. James B. Smith (USAF ret’d) on “The Middle East and the Gulf: A Region in Crisis”), Sudbury, MA (Prof. Nina Tumarkin on “Vladimir Putin: Personage, President, Potentate”), Quechee, VT (Dennis Stern on “The New Literacy: How to Fact-Check Today’s Media”), and York Harbor, ME (Amb. Larry Pope on “The American Diplomatic Service and the President”). Modest annual dues of $20 bring members meeting notices and annual membership lists with fellow members’ contact information. For more information, please contact Liz Barnett, or 617-232-4241.
